Shadow or No Shadow. Groundhog Day, Again

“Well, what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn’t one today.” – Groundhog Day

Today is a snow day. No school, appointments canceled. I’m at home with the family. As I type this, they’re working on a craft project. We had French toast for breakfast. The snow is coming down hard outside. It’s also Groundhog Day.

We live in Vermont, so the forecasting ability of that particular rodent is lost on us. Shadow or no shadow, we’re getting six more weeks of winter. What Groundhog Day really means to me is Bill Murray trapped in a time loop. How I would love to get trapped in such a loop, where I could endlessly, eventually improve myself. I would learn forgiveness and patience. In a word, selflessness. I’d be a better parent, partner, member of society.

Today is a snow day, but it isn’t much different from yesterday, which was a Sunday. We’re at home, enjoying the morning, but thinking about what to do later. How to balance our own needs and work with the interests of each other. How to do what’s best for all of us.

It was the same on Saturday, and every day before that. It’s a snow day, and Groundhog Day. It’s just another day. This is how family works.
