Everything You Need to Know and Buy for a Positive Potty Journey

Potty training is one of those parenting milestones that feels both exciting and…a little terrifying. On one hand, the thought of never buying another box of diapers is thrilling. On the other hand, you’re about to embark on a journey filled with lots of little messes and a fair share of patience-testing moments. But not to worry! With the right mindset, preparation, and tools, you and your kiddo will be ready to tackle this milestone head on.

Preparing Yourself and Your Child for Potty Training

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to set the stage for potty training success starts well before you ditch the diapers. Taking some time to prepare your little one allows them to get on board with the upcoming transition in a positive, low-pressure way. Let’s talk about a few things you can do to get your child and yourself ready for this big step.

1. Adjust Your Expectations

Potty training isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Some kids catch on quickly, while others take a little longer. There are a lot of factors at play that determine what your potty training journey might look like. Your child’s development, your family’s lifestyle, and the approach you take are just some of the reasons why no two potty training experiences look the same. Rather than setting super high expectations or unrealistic goals, approach it with a flexible, patient mindset. My mantra is: Potty training is a PROCESS, not a one-time EVENT. Accidents will happen, and progress is seldom linear! Know that accidents are actually the best learning opportunities, and with patience and consistency, your child can learn how to use the potty at a pace that makes sense for them.

2. Look for Signs of Readiness

Nailing the time in which you start can greatly increase your chances of success! Keep in mind that it isn’t all about age – look for indicators that your child is developmentally and emotionally ready for this transition. Do they have developing communication and strong gross motor skills? Having these well-established before you begin is essential. Is your child showing interest in the potty, staying dry for longer periods, or telling you when they’ve gone in their diaper? These are also great signs that they’re ready to start and that their little bodies are physiologically capable.

3. Talk About It

Make potty training a normal, positive topic in your home. Read potty-themed books, let your child watch you use the toilet (if you’re comfortable with that!), and talk about how exciting it is to be a “big kid.” The more familiar they are with the concept, the easier the transition will be. It’s important to plant the seed BEFORE expecting them to do or change anything themselves right off the bat to set the stage for a more relaxed process.

4. Set Up a Potty-Friendly Routine

Starting with simple routines like sitting on the potty after meals or before bath time gives your child early exposure to the potty with no pressure to perform. Kids thrive on predictability and knowing what to expect, so this can act as a gentle introduction to what’s coming. Establishing a consistent routine will help your child get comfortable with what using the potty instead of diapers will look like.

Essential Items to Buy for a Smooth Potty Training Experience

Now that you’re mentally prepped, let’s talk about the must-have potty training gear. Having the right tools can make the process so much easier (and a little more fun for your child!). I always encourage parents to take their littles along when shopping for potty supplies so they can have more involvement and ownership over the process. Continuing to provide age-appropriate choices throughout this journey will give your child a sense of control and keep power struggles at bay. Here are my top recommendations to have on hand!

1. A Child-Friendly Potty and/or Seat Reducer

Having a designated potty chair or seat reducer is key. I personally prefer to have both options available so you can take advantage of the benefits of each! Small potty chairs are great for convenience and portability, while getting some exposure to the regular toilet can help your child learn to use the potty places other than home right from the start.

Ity by Ingenuity’s Flip & Sit Potty Seat is a fantastic choice because it gives easy toilet access to the whole family without the bulk and clutter of potty seat inserts. Simply flip it down when your toddler needs the toilet, and flip it up when you need the toilet yourself!

My favorite in standalone potties is hands down the Summer Infant by Ingenuity My Size Potty Pro. This is a fun option because it looks just like a miniature real toilet, complete with a flushing sound that makes potty time exciting. And it can easily be moved around the house or taken on the go!

2. Step Stool

A step stool is essential for little ones who want to use the big toilet and reach the sink to wash their hands. A sturdy, non-slip stool will help them feel more independent. The Ingenuity Prepare to Potty 3-in-1 System is a floor potty, a seat insert, and a step stool all in one!

3. Comfortable Underwear

Having some comfy, easy-to-pull-down undies on hand will make the process smoother for you and your child. Let them pick out some fun designs to get them excited! I’d recommend starting off with about 15 pairs or so, as there will be accidents in the beginning! My favorite brand for kids’ underwear is Lucky & Me because of their super soft fabrics and mindful designs that make them an ideal choice even for kids with sensory processing challenges or sensitive skin.

4. Flushable Wipes

Regular toilet paper can be tricky for little hands. Flushable wipes make cleanup easier and more effective, giving your child confidence in their wiping skills (and saving you from surprise skid marks in their undies—yep, it happens!).

5. Potty Training Rewards

A little motivation goes a long way! Sticker charts, a small treat, or even a big high-five can help reinforce positive potty habits. Some kids love picking out a special toy after they’ve mastered using the potty consistently.

6. Cleaning Supplies

Let’s be real—accidents are part of the process. Keep some enzyme-based cleaner on hand to tackle any messes quickly. And if you’re using a floor potty, make sure you have gentle disinfectant wipes to keep it fresh.

7. Books and Toys for the Potty

Some kids need a little distraction to help them relax on the potty. A few fun books (like How Do You Poo?) or small sensory or fidget toys can encourage them to sit for longer without feeling pressured.

Final Thoughts: You’ve Got This!

Potty training is a journey, and every child takes their own unique path. Some kids are potty pros in a few days, while others take weeks (or even months) to get the hang of it. The key is to stay patient, celebrate the small wins, and keep a sense of humor about the process. (Because let’s be honest, at some point, your child will try to flush an entire roll of toilet paper just for fun.)

You’re doing an amazing job, and your little one is lucky to have a parent who is so invested in helping them succeed. With a little preparation, the right tools, and a lot of love, you’ll both get through this stage and come out on the other side—diaper-free and proud! Happy pottying!
